Maisie and I went to the bicycle shop last Tuesday to get her a helmet. We’ve been watching the other kids on the street riding their bikes for a few weeks and Maisie wanted to join in. You can’t ride outside without a helmet though so we needed to go shopping first. I thought she’d be really fussy about it (I hate wearing a helmet) but she was really good about it and very excited. She tells everyone that her grandfather got her a helmet. Neither of her actual grandfathers were involved but the fellow who helped me fit it and sold it to us had grey hair. She was so excited about getting to ride her bike that she even told the mother of one of her friends at day care.
The helmet has airplanes and is very popular. Every day since we got it Maisie has talked about wearing her “helmet hat” and riding her giraffe bike. Her first ride was in the evening between getting home and dinner time. She went three-quarters of the way down the street before she was ready to turn around. And I really think that only happened because the mosquitos were starting to come out. She’s been out on her bike every day since. Sometimes just for a few minutes, sometimes longer. She’s still a bit shy about riding it with the other, mostly older, kids around but I don’t think it will be too long before she’s chasing after them.
