The roving was left over from Erin’s felting class a few weeks ago (notice the place-mat from December 12th). It has shorter fibers than the brown stuff so I figured it would probably be a little more fiddly to work with and did a little more preparation before I started spinning.
The pieces of roving I had were not very long - only about 50 cm or so of the blue - so I pulled them into thin strips. I tried to make the strips about the same size so that my yarn would be relatively even. I had only a few inches of the yellow but I liked the way it looked with the blue so I pulled it into strips the same size (but shorter).
Setting up the spindle was a little easier this time since I knew how it was supposed to end up (though my first knot around the spindle shaft was a bit loose and it fell off). Spinning was a little easier too. Pulling the roving into strips meant that I wasn’t having to handle and draft as much wool at a time and it was much easier to manage the joins between strips. Every once in a while I would join in one the short yellow strips instead of a blue one and then go back to blue. This picture shows the spindle when I was about half way through my pile roving strips. I think the yarn on the spindle looks kind of neat.
My finished yarn weighs about 10 grams and is about 13.5 m long. I’m not sure what it is going to become. Maybe the edge of something or an i-cord necklace ...
