Last weekend I took the “Tulip Party” class with Melody Johnson. She was a great teacher - fun and full of smiles and funny stories. Her hand-dyed fabrics were so neat and meant that everyone’s quilt top would develop differently. {reamore}Working from the pattern we traced out all the shapes for the background and tulips then carefully cut out the shapes from fabric (with fusable web already on the back) using the templates and fused the seam allowances together.
Here is my piece in progress. I think this was at the beginning of the second day.
I chose to make each tulip have its own colour theme but I saw other people using all sorts of contrasting colours in each tulip. The multicolour approach seemed to emphasis the sweeping lines of the design. Lots of my lines didn’t quite line up so my method worked well for me.
By shortly after lunch I was nearly done.
The last step for the quilt top was to be fused onto a layer of batting. It’s now ready to be embellished with a bit of embroidery then backed and quilted.
I started a bit of free form fusing in the last half hour or so of the class but I don’t have a picture of it yet. I am hoping to do more work on both my pieces later this week so I will be able to bring something for show and tell at the next Yellowknife Quilter’s meeting.
